Overview

It takes courage to seek counselling as an individual or a couple.  Our team is eager to support you with your challenges.

Individuals…

Individual counselling can help with feeling heard, life transitions, communication with others, being frustrated as a parent, stress, burnout, learn how to overcome challenges and more.

Couples…

Whether you have been together for 50 years or you are just beginning your journey together, relationships of all types can encounter challenges at any stage. There are many reasons couples may seek support in counselling – challenges with communication, parenting conflicts, infidelity, financial disagreements or a wide variety of social and emotional needs. We recognize that couples seeking professional support are coming to us with difficult challenges. Our mission is to help you make sense of these concerns and any distress you may be experiencing in your relationship.

We welcome all relationships in our practice including LGBTQ2 and non-traditional relationships.

The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method utilizes the Sound Relationship House to explain how relationships are built upon levels, with trust and commitment being the walls that hold it all together.

At the ground level of the house, there is building love maps (how well you know each other) and at the top of the house there is shared meaning (understanding important visions, narratives, myths, and metaphors about your relationship). However, there are many levels within the house that focus on building skills around sharing fondness and admiration, turning towards “bids”, taking a positive perspective to problem-solving, managing conflict, and encouraging honest and open communication.

The Gottman Method emphasizes closeness and friendship behaviour, addresses conflict productively, and builds a life of shared meaning.

The Gottman Method emphasizes that conflict is normal within a relationship, but the way couples communicate within conflict is what can make it problematic. Utilizing this method, couples can learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair strain caused by the past.

The Gottman Method can be used to support couples with many struggles including frequent conflict and arguments, poor communication, feeling emotionally distanced on the verge of separation, and more specific troubles like sexual difficulties, infidelity, money, and parenting.
